The KadeeĀ® āSBEā bottom shelf couplers have a functioning bottom shelf designed not to allow the opposing knuckle to slide down on those dips, bumps, or transitions.
During the 1970s, the Type āEā coupler with a bottom shelf was developed as the Type āSBEā coupler and eventually became mandatory for all new and rebuilt cars as a minimum requirement.
The prototype bottom shelf was designed to keep a broken knuckle from falling to the roadbed and presenting a derailment hazard. The shelf also prevents vertical coupler uncoupling during derailment.
The #120 coupler can be mounted in the supplied #242 Gearboxes or directly into most manufacturer's molded-on gearboxes.
